Tour, Sip and Colour
Join us for our Tour, Sip and Colour event with Dr. Sonia Peter. This is an invitation to our members and persons interested in joining The Biocultural Education and Research Programme. This FREE event will be held at The Andromeda Botanic Gardens where you will enjoy an afternoon tour of the gardens, followed by expressing your colouring creativity with pages from our adult colouring book Yabisi Guada, while sampling and sipping locally produced wine and juice. This book celebrates our heritage and connection to plants by recognizing the value of these plants while highlighting their textural beauty. Professor Kids Science Wonderland
BERP is excited to partner with the Professor Kids Programme. Biocultural knowledge is pivotal to our appreciation of the value and beauty in nature and the importance of sustainable living. At the wonderland we will have our educational tools on display and engage the children in learning activities. We strongly believe in art being a tool for change and our artistic perspectives on nature will be fully engaged. There will be a plant treasure hunt, colouring activities, a plant knowledge spelling bee competition, flash card games, puzzle solving competitions.
Medical Ethnobotany and Skincare
Ethnobotany is the study of the interrelationship between plants and people. Our traditional biocultural knowledge is replete with examples for skincare involving the use of plant infused oils. In this course we bring focus to some of these local plants and infused oils along with methods of preparing products for various skin types and issues. During the course you will be challenged to design your personal skincare routine and you will be provided with a production box of base materials and storage containers. A certificate of completion is provided at the end of the course.
Traditional Medicine in Barbados
Barbados has a tradition of using plants for healing stretching back to the period of slavery in the 1600s to 1800s. As a dedicated public health care system was established, the more conventional allopathic methods became relevant. As we see the increasing incidence of NCDs within the population it is important to assess the attitudes towards the traditional versus conventional methods of managing health issues. The survey responses are confidential and we are excited to hear your perspectives.
The Biocultural Education and Research Programme is a nonprofit promoting conservation of local plant biodiversity for food security and health.
The Longevity Clinic is a health institution based in Barbados that embraces a more holistic approach in addressing the management of NCDs.
Medical Ethnobotany
Ethnobotany is the study of the interrelationship between plants and people. We have depended on plants for survival throughout civilisation as a source for food, materials for building shelter and shaping crafts and of course healing teas, salves, inhalants and other preparations for health.
This course offers an opportunity to learn more about this traditional system of healing and the plants that are found useful. It begins with aspects of the botany of the plants and ends with a simple experiment to show how we can assess the value of a plant extract.
No prior background in the study of plants and their medicine is required. A certificate of completion will be provided but this is not a full academic course.
